El presente simple en español. The present simple in Spanish. (Regular verbs)

En este post vamos a explicar el tiempo presente en español. En particular el presente simple en verbos regulares..
We use the "present simple" to talk about:

-Things that are generally true. Por ejemplo: En España hace mucho calor en verano.

-Things that happen at intervals. Por jemplo: A veces visito a mis amigos en Madrid.

-Things that are true at the moment. Por ejemplo: Yo no trabajo los domingos.


Now let´s see how we form the present simple for the regular verbs.
In order to form the present simple in Spanish we have to take in account that in Spanish all the verbs in the infinitive forms end in -AR - ER or -IR. Those verbs ending in -AR  belong to the first conjugation, the verbs ending in -ER to the second conjugation and the verbs ending in -IR to the third conjugation.

1)The first conjugation -AR. Por ejemplo: estudiar, hablar, bailar, caminar.

Let´s take for example the present simple of the verb hablar.

Yo hablo
Tú hablas
Él/ella habla
Nosotros/as hablamos 
Vosotros/as habláis
Ellos/as hablan

The letters in bold are the 1st conjugation endings for the present tense in Spanish. So basically in order to form the present tense you just have to follow the next two steps:
1- Get rid of the AR ending in the infinitive form: Por ejemplo: HABL-AR
2-Add the ending of the present simple to the "stem" of the verb. Por ejemplo: Yo habl-o, Tú habl-as, Él habla, nosotros hablamos........


2)Now let´s  see the second conjugation. Verbs ending in -ER. Por ejemplo: Comer, beber,

Yo bebo
Tú bebes
Él/Ella bebe
Nosotros/as bebemos
Vosotros/as bebéis
Ellos/as beben

The letters in bold are the 2nd conjugation endings for the present tense in Spanish. So basically in order to form the present tense you just have to follow the next two steps:
1- Get rid of the ER ending in the infinitive form: Por ejemplo: BEB-ER
2-Add the ending of the present simple to the "stem" of the verb. Por ejemplo: Yo beb-o, tú beb-es. él viv-e.....


3)Finally let´s see the 3rd conjugation.Verbs ending in -IR. Por ejemplo:  Vivir, Partir (to leave).

Yo vivo
Tú vives
Él/Ella vive
Nosotros/as vivimos
Vosotros/as vivís
Ellos/as viven

The letters in bold are the 3rd conjugation endings for the present tense in Spanish. So basically in order to form the present tense you just have to follow the next two steps:
1- Get rid of the IR ending in the infinitive form: Por ejemplo: VIV-IR
2-Add the ending of the present simple to the "stem" of the verb. Por ejemplo: Yo viv-o, tú viv-es, él/ella viv-e......


As a summary it is important to remember that the endings are different ( but similar) in each of the 3 different conjugations and  in order to from the present regular tense we just have to add the endings to the stem of the regular verbs.
